The Sunnanvind project is led by the Government of Åland. Sunnanvind's mission is to enable offshore wind power in the northern maritime areas, maximizing the benefits for Åland as quickly as possible. The project is conducting preparatory work for the auctioning of the rights to utilize these maritime areas.
The Government of Åland initiated the Sunnanvind Project in the spring of 2021.
The Sunnanvind Project is primarily financed with 1.7 million € from EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).
The Sunnanvind Project aims to enable the establishment of offshore wind power on the northern maritime areas defined in Åland's maritime spatial plan (MSP). The enabling process includes, among other things:

The northern maritime areas have a combined size of 674 km², and are located 15-45 km from the northern coast. Discussions are taking place to explore the possibilities of combining and enlargening the areas.
The estimated power potential is 4 GW, resulting in an annual energy production of 20 TWh, which is approximately 30% of Finland's current electricity production.
The Sunnanvind Project is required to submit its final report to the European Commission no later than 30.6.2026. The Government of Åland will continue to drive and monitor Åland's interests throughout the entire lifespan of the offshore wind farms.
